First Person Singular

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
First Person Singular is a Dark Hollow production featuring Joe Bocchetti (keyboards, Fender Rhodes electric piano, electric bass, upright bass, recorder and percussion), Vince Farinaccio (voice, acoustic and electric guitars, upright bass, drums and clarinet), Katie Coltri (voice) and Jerry Gormley (voice). All compositions written by Bocchetti and Farinaccio except for She Dreams of the Snake Charmer by Gormley, Bocchetti and Farinaccio. The Temple and Autumn Olive were originally included as part of the soundtrack to the film One More Chance. All selections Copyright 2003. While First Person Singular can be listened to as individual tracks, it is meant to be experienced as an extended piece beginning with the printed Prologue included in this booklet and continuing through the spoken word and instrumental selections on the disc. In this respect, it is more closely related to the dramatic radio shows of the 1930s and 1940s particularly the aural documents created by Orson Welles whose influence is acknowledged in the title of this work. However, unlike radio drama, with its plotted story, First Person Singular is a character study comprised of a series of monologues and instrumental pieces that trace, in both words and sounds, the mental collapse of the central character. Therefore, the sound design on Conversation of a Woman works together with the words to provide a more complete picture of the character's deteriorating mental state. The musical soundtrack of Snake Charmer and Letter of a Woman illuminate her psychological and emotional depth through sound textures that convey the range of the character's sexual fantasies, fears, relief, despair and dementia while the bass and drum pattern on Diary of a Woman reflects her cadenced inner-most journey as each diary entry is spoken in dialogue with the clarinet. The Temple and Autumn Olive each explore emotional states through choice of instruments and sounds as well as melody and chords.

PROLOGUE
At the age of 18, she read Shakespeare by the old stone wall near the lake in the early months of spring. She thought of Ophelia and for a moment, the lake met her gaze and she felt a sudden chill.
That summer, between clandestine trips with friends across the border into Mexico, she swam in the lake with members of her church group. The guys would pull pranks by pulling off the tops of the girls' bathing suits. She had eluded them on every occasion except one. In order to retrieve what was taken, she had to stand before them, topless. She glanced down hesitantly to see what they saw and came to understand her power as a woman. She noticed beads of water on her untanned breasts drying in the afternoon sun. She felt their stares and looked up, returning their gaze, no longer embarrassed as before. She understood the command she had over these young men, the control she now had by standing there revealing what they wanted and needed to see. She didn't flinch for a moment, not even while some touched her.
The following autumn, she lost her virginity near the lake in a parked car. He was one of the swimmers from the summer involved in the prank. He told her that he couldn't stop thinking about her. When they made love in the car for the first time she stared into his eyes. It was over in less than a minute. Afterward, she was transfixed by the blood on the seat.

That winter, they were married.
